Razorbacks, McLaughlin eliminated from Fayetteville regional
Kansas State beats SEMO in regional championship game
Southeast Missouri State University stunned the University of Arkansas 6-3 Sunday afternoon in an NCAA regional tournament elimination game.
The upset took place in front of a heavily partisan Razorback crowd at Baum-Walker Stadium in Fayetteville, Ark.
Arkansas senior first baseman Ben McLaughlin, who played two seasons of baseball at Hutchinson Community College, went 1-for-4 against SEMO.
McLaughlin finished the season with a .302 batting average (61 hits in 202 at-bats), scored 42 runs, hit 11 doubles and nine homers and drove in 42 runs.
Ty Stauss hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning and Southeast Missouri State never trailed against No. 5 national seed Arkansas.
Josh Cameron and Ian Riley had RBI singles in a three-run fourth inning to put the Redhawks up 4-0.
Arkansas scored its first run in the top of the fifth on a two-out solo home run by Peyton Holt.
The Redhawks got the run back in their half of the inning when Brooks Kettering homered to lead off the inning. Riley singled and scored on a Kettering single to give Southeast Missouri State a five-run lead.
The Razorbacks’ final two runs came in the ninth on a one-out, two-run home run by Parker Rowland.
Collin Wilma started for the Redhawks, allowing one run on one hit and two walks in 4 1/3 innings with six strikeouts. Logan Katen (2-0) got the win with 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief. Kyle Miller got the final two outs for his eighth save.
Wood (3-2) took the loss after yielding four runs on four hits and a walk in three innings. He struck out four.
Arkansas finished the season with a 44-16 record. The Razorbacks posted a 34-5 record at home.
Kansas State headed to NCAA baseball super regional
Kansas State defeated Southeast Missouri State 7-2 in the regional championship game Sunday night.
Kansas State (35-24) posted a 3-0 record to win the regional title and advance to the super regional.
The Wildcats defeated Louisiana Tech 19-4 in their opening round game and stunned the Arkansas Razorbacks 7-6 in the winner’s bracket finals.
It is the second time Kansas State baseball has reached the super regional and the first time since 2013. It’s the first super regional for six-year head coach Pete Hughes.
Kansas State will play No. 12 Virginia in the best-of-3 super regional at Charlottesville, Va., either on June 7-9 or June 8-10.
There are eight super regionals. The eight winners will advance to the College World Series June 14-24 at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Neb.
Central Kansas Crushers softball, baseball teams compete in tournaments
Hutchinson-based Central Kansas Crushers softball and baseball teams competed in tournaments during the weekend.
The 16-18U Central Kansas Crushers softball team went 1-3 in pool play at the Top Gun Discovery Showcase in Shawnee.
Hutchinson High School junior-to-be Kohlbie Craft, who played softball and basketball for the Salthawks, belted her first home run of the summer in a win against Nebraska Gold.
Craft pitches and plays first and third base for the Crushers.
Other members of the 16-18U Crushers softball team are Kaci Young and Brett Young, Halstead; Maegan Torrey, Salina Sacred Heart; Kaetlyn White, Andover; Kimber Ogorzolka, Southeast of Saline; Lillie Mendoza, Maize; Meleia Ingram, Bennington; Zoey Debenham, Abilene; Hannah Gardner, Salina South; and Kadence Hall, Goddard Eisenhower.
Kaci Young has committed to Hutchinson Community College, Ingram committed to Barton Community College and Debenham committed to Cloud County Community College.
Central Kansas Crushers baseball teams won the 14U and 8U championships at the 11th annual Central Kansas Classic Friday and Saturday.
The 13U Crushers baseball team placed second Friday and Saturday at the Charlie Dunn Tournament in Augusta.
The 8U Crushers also placed second at the McPherson Spring Slam Tournament May 24-25 with a 2-1 record.
The Central Kansas Crushers 12U softball team won the Memorial Day Stars and Stripes Championship with a 7-1 record and turned a triple play during their win in the semifinals. The team went 3-0 in pool play.
