Lonnie Paramore, Mary Ver Steeg will be inducted into Sterling College Athletics Hall of Fame
Haven High School boys basketball coach Lonnie Paramore and Hutchinson Central Christian High School volleyball coach Mary Ver Steeg will be inducted into the Sterling College Athletics Hall of Fame in a ceremony on Sept. 28.
Sterling College will also induct women’s soccer player Jaymi (McAnally) Westrup and the 2013 KCAC championship football team into the school’s Hall of Fame.
Paramore (Sterling College Class of 1992) had an illustrious career for the Warriors in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Paramore was a three-year letter winner, a two-time All-KCAC award winner. He was a two-time NAIA All-District winner.
He was a two-time Sterling College Outstanding Basketball Player, 1990-91 Outstanding Senior Athlete and 1990-91 KCAC Co-Player of the Year.
At the end of Paramore’s final season at Sterling College, he was the second-highest in points scored in a single game (44), had the second-highest scoring average (23.6 ppg), second-highest in points scored in a season and held the highest number of 3-point field goals made in a season (63).
Paramore maintained the highest career shooting percentage (49.6%), had the highest career free throws made percentage (81.2%) and was fifth in total career points.
Paramore has been the Haven High School boys basketball coach for 16 of his 32 seasons. He got his 400th career victory on Feb. 13 when Haven defeated Hesston 45-38 at the Haven gymnasium. He recorded three more wins this season for 403.
Paramore coached at Fairfield High School for 13 years and Ashland for three years.
Ver Steeg, or “Coach Mary” as she now is endearingly referred to, impacted the lives of many athletes in her 16 years at the helm of the Sterling College volleyball program.
She is the all-time winningest volleyball coach with 255 career wins for the Warriors.
Ver Steeg joined the Sterling College Hall of Fame as the first-ever KCAC Championship team coach in 1993. She repeated the feat in 1997 and took the KCAC crown for the second time.
The 1997 team had an overall record of 29-10 and went undefeated in the KCAC with a perfect 18-0 conference record.
That team also played in the NAIA Great Plains Regional Tournament. Ver Steeg’s teams also succeeded in the classroom. Eight players earned AVCA Academic Team status.
Since retiring from coaching at the collegiate level, Ver Steeg has continued at Sterling College as a professor, continuing to influence young people in an athletic setting.
Hays’ Dylan Dreiling accepts, signs contract with Texas Rangers
Dreiling, a former standout at Hays High, was selected by the Rangers with the 65th overall pick in the second round of the MLB draft on Sunday night.
Dreiling was the Most Outstanding Player in the recent College World Series for the national champion Tennessee Volunteers.
According to the Hays Daily News Facebook site, Hays Larks’ manager Frank Leo, Dreiling’s grandfather, said that before the selection the team called Dreiling at his watch party with family and friends.
Leo said Texas offered a contract and Dreiling accepted, adding Dreiling will find out in the next few days where in the minor leagues he will start his pro career with the defending World Series champion.
“Just really happy for him,” Leo said. “He set some goals and wasn’t afraid to work for them.”
