A new grocery store in Hutchinson, Kansas recently celebrated a grand opening on July 12. La Bodega International Market, located at 209 N Walnut, is officially open for business and promises authentic Mexican treats, staples and ingredients.
“Bienvenidos a La Bodega, donde encontraras el autentico saobor de Mexico!" their Facebook page said, which translates to “Welcome to La Bodega, where you will find authentic tastes of Mexico!”
La Bodega’s owner is Rosa Lopez. It has been one of her dreams to open a grocery store where she lives, like her mother had in Durango, Mexico. Lopez has lived in Hutchinson for almost 10 years, and her dream finally became financially viable.
“She decided to go for it,” said her son, Alexis Ibarra.

Ibarra explained what it was like growing up with a grandmother who owned a grocery store.
“Grandchildren could grab anything they wanted: candy, Cokes and more,” Ibarra said. “Her store was connected to her home.”
Lopez’s La Bodega is woman-owned, just like her mother, Rena Reyes. Reyes became a widow when she was young and had to find a way.
“Her name means ‘Queen,’” said Ibarra.
Lopez tries to have a little bit of everything in her store. They buy fresh foods like queso fresco and chorizo from a local vendor in Wichita. Unique ingredients are available including fresh Munster cheese and tender prickly pear leaves, sodas, spices, mixes, breads, pastries, and pinatas.
Ibarra said his mother tries to provide things, like the pinatas, that remind people of home.

“The most popular items in the store with all races of people who visit are the fresh meats,” said Ibarra.
La Bodega is open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Abiertos todos los dias de 9:00 a.m to 9:00 p.m.
