Hutchinson Salthawk squads roll past Newton Railers
Hutch teams compete in Kansas Class 5A West sub-state next week
The Hutchinson High School boys and girls basketball teams rolled to blowout victories over the Newton Railers Friday night at the Newton High School.
The Hutchinson girls won 63-28 and the Salthawk boys won 73-36.
The Hutchinson girls improved to 12-8 and the Salthawk boys now are 14-6.
The Hutchinson girls led Newton 23-5 after the first quarter, 32-13 at halftime and 55-21 after three quarters. With a running clock, the Salthawks outscored the Railers 8-7 in the fourth quarter.
Kaia Smith led the Salthawk girls with 18 points, including 10 points in the first half. Grace Posch scored 15 points. Azariah Dawes contributed 9 points, Kohlbie Craft 8, Rachel Tomac 6, Lily Rodriguez 4 and Tenley Keaton 3 (on a 3-pointer).
“It was a great way to end an exciting regular season in my first year at the helm here,” said Hutchinson High School girls basketball coach Kalen Hilst.
In the Hutchinson-Newton boys game Friday night, Hutchinson led 15-13 in the first quarter and 32-22 at halftime.
The Salthawk boys hit six 3-pointers in the third quarter and went on a 28-7 run to open up a 60-29 lead. Hutchinson won the final quarter 13-7 for the final score of 73-36.
Julian Smith and Jax Heneha led Hutchinson with 18 points each. Terrell King added 12 points and Tai Clark 9.
Cole Dillon led the Railers with 13 points.
Newton’s girls and boys teams both posted 2-18 records. The season is over for the Railer basketball teams since neither placed in the Top 16 in the Kansas Class 5A West standings.
The Newton boys are coached by Demetric Williams, who played basketball at Wichita State University from 2009-2013.
Newton is the host site for the Class 5A West Sub-State Tournament.
The Hutchinson squads will find out their Class 5A West first-round sub-state matchups when the pairings are announced Saturday morning by the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
The Hutchinson High School boy’s team could face Goddard Eisenhower in the first round, possibly at the Salthawk Activity Center Tuesday.
The Salthawks defeated Eisenhower 70-54 Feb. 6 at Goddard. Eisenhower lost to Andover Central 63-44 Friday night.
Hilst said the Salthawk girls will play Kapaun-Mount Carmel in a first-round Class 5A West Sub-State game at the Kapaun gym in Wichita.
“They are a great team and we will have to be ready,” Hilst said. “I’m excited for our opportunity but we’ll have to be ready to go. It’ll be a tough road to get to state.”
Great Bend splits games with Hays High
The Great Bend Panther boys basketball team handed Western Athletic Conference rival Hays High a 67-54 setback Friday night.
The Hays High girls defeated Great Bend 42-36.
The Great Bend boys are 15-5, the Hays girls are 15-5, the Great Bend girls are 14-5 and the Hays boys are 13-7.
In boys games of interest to Hutchinson, Derby defeated Maize 57-53, Maize South defeated Salina South 76-53, Andover defeated Valley Center 66-53 and Campus defeated Salina Central 81-63.
In girls games of interest, Goddard defeated Arkansas City 47-30, Maize South defeated Salina South 43-19, Derby defeated Maize 51-28, Salina Central defeated Campus 55-18, Andover Central defeated Goddard Eisenhower 36-32, Andover defeated Valley Center 47-29.
In Thursday's boys games, Dodge City defeated Liberal 54-35 and Bishop Carroll defeated Wichita South 54-51.
In Thursday's girl’s games, Liberal defeated Dodge City 49-35 and Bishop Carroll defeated Wichita South 57-45.
Class 1A Division I boys sub-state action
The season came to an end Thursday night for the Pretty Prairie and Fairfield boys Thursday in the Class 1A Burden-Central Sub-State.
Pretty Prairie lost to Udall 60-57 and Fairfield lost to Wichita Central Christian Academy 54-44.
Pretty Prairie finished the season with a 7-12 record and Fairfield posted a 5-14 record.
In the 1A Division I Solomon Sub-State Thursday, the Little River boys defeated Goessel 40-27.
Little River improved to 11-9 and will play the host Solomon (14-6), which received a first-round bye, at 7:30 p.m. next Thursday in the semifinals.
The 6 p.m. semifinal features Sylvan Unified (13-6) vs. Canton-Galva (10-11). Sylvan defeated Wakefield 52-16 and Canton-Galva defeated Rural Vista 45-41 in other first-round games Thursday.
Class 1A Division I girl’s sub-state action
Fairfield lost to Udall 57-44 in a first-round game Friday at Udall. The Falcons finished the season with a 7-12 record.
