Hutch Comic Con a full family effort
After the successful Hutch Mini-Con at Memorial Hall in March, the Evans family is gearing up for a much larger event on Saturday, June 22, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Kansas State Fairgrounds.
Tickets are $5 for adults. Children 15 and under are free with a paid adult. $30 VIP tickets are available, too. They grant entry to a VIP and vendor event on Friday, June 21, at 6 p.m. and 9:30 a.m. entry on Saturday, June 22, and other perks. Tickets can be purchased online through June 15 and available at the door during the con.
Kendall and Kimberly Evans and their sons Wyatt and Paul have filled the fairgrounds’ Meadowlark Building, locking in over 100 booths of vendors, authors, cosplayers and artists.
Multiple activities throughout the day include a scavenger hunt, zombie shootout and robot races, with the addition of a gelfire water guns competition, a medallion hunt, and Plinko on a board built by the family.
Three medallion hunts with clues posted to the event’s Facebook page and in The Hutchinson Tribune are scheduled. A citywide medallion hunt will be held during the Smallville Fest, with the exact date and time to be determined.
The event will hold youth and adult cosplay competitions, with the top three finishers in each category winning cash and prizes. The adult competition’s top cash prize is $1,000.
Jedi Master Dan-Bu Cohut will hold 3 sessions of the Jedi Academy. The 501st Legion, a national Star Wars cosplay group, and the Wichita Hive, a Resident Evil cosplay group, will attend.
Several panels focusing on costumes and props will teach cosplay techniques. Additional panels are in the planning stage.
The con will feature a Super Smash Bros tournament. There is a $10 entry fee, of which $5 goes towards cash prizes. Signup is required.

After the event ends at 6 p.m., participants are invited to attend Hutch Rec’s Fair, Foods and Tunes, which occurs on the fairgrounds from 4 - 10 p.m. That evening concludes with the monthly Family Film Night with “The Avengers” showing on the big screen on the west side of the Grandstand.
The Evans have plans to hold Boo! Con on October 26 in the Cottonwood building on the fairgrounds.
